Teaching Staff Opening
Puget Sound Community School/Seattle, WA

High School History Teacher
Upattinas School, Glenmoore, PA

Teaching Staff Opening at the Puget Sound Community School/Seattle, WA
Puget Sound Community School (PSCS), an innovative, state-approved private high school based in Seattle's University District, has an open teaching staff position for for the upcoming school year, 2007/2008, and ideally beyond. This 10 month, renewable school year position (August 20, 2007 through June 20, 2008) is a salaried position paying $25,050 with additional benefits, including full medical, dental and retirement, that value $8603 for a total compensation package of $33,653.

PSCS makes real and positive impacts in the lives of the youth we serve. Self-esteem, embracing diversity, preparation for compassionate and socially responsible citizenship in the school and community are among the valued goals of a PSCS education. We spark new interests for students and help them deepen their knowledge in subject areas they're already pursuing. PSCS helps students develop the skills needed in the 21st century, including how to navigate and interpret information, make conscious choices, and evaluate a world that is constantly changing.

The school was founded upon the belief that people are intrinsically compelled by their own curiosity and desires to learn, and when provided a positive and supportive environment will enthusiastically pursue meaningful and challenging tasks. PSCS students independently choose how to spend their time. They may play, read, work on academics or other projects, reflect, talk with friends, engage in independent study projects in the community, etc.

The PSCS staff work together as a team to provide a nurturing, respectful and vibrant school environment for approximately 30 7th-12th grade students in a multi-age setting. We act as role models for our students and help them gain a sense of themselves and their role in the wider community. In a world of increasing competition, that role is often very hard to find. In hiring staff members, PSCS first looks for strength of character and personality as well as deep passions and a willingness to be open to experiencing whatever it is that life offers. It is our belief that people teach who they are. In addition to this, the ideal candidate will possess some of the following characteristics, skills or experiences:

  • experience teaching science in a high school setting
  • have a visual arts, music, outdoor education, and/or counseling background
  • be familiar with a student-centered approach to education
  • be multi-lingual
  • is certified to teach in Washington State (note, this is NOT a requirement for this position)

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to work in an established innovative school.

Full-Time Teacher Position at TheFree School
TheFree School in Albany, NY, the longest running inner-city democratic free school in the country, is seeking a full-time teacher. We are looking for someone to work primarily with children under the age of six; however, teachers are expected to be flexible and to work with children of all ages. Hours include 8am-3pm Monday-Friday following school calendar as well as weekly staff meetings, monthly staff support meetings, and teacher conferences. Position entails supervision and guidance of children, preparation of activities and especially attending to the emotional growth and well-being of the kids. Because here at the Free School we pay a great deal of attention to children's emotional selves, it is imperative that teachers and interns attend to their own emotional growth as well. Staff shares daily tasks including maintenance, clean-up, opening/closing the building, serving meals, administrative tasks, and organizational tasks. Throughout the school year, field trips, overnights, and other after hours adventures are also scheduled. Additionally, we prepare the school two weeks prior to opening (this coming year we will start on August 27), meet several times during the school year for teacher conferences, and remain two days after closing in June for clean-up. *The **Free** **School**, the longest running inner-city democratic free school in the country, is located in a racially and socio-economically diverse neighborhood in **Albany**'s South End. When the issue is an interpersonal conflict, the meeting becomes a supportive circle where real emotional healing takes place. Students share the responsibility with teachers for school policy and planning through the weekly all-school meeting, where students and teachers have an equal vote.
