Need PenPal Class for Alternative Class in the Ukraine Hi, I am a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine. One of my projects is to set up some alternative education classes in my little town. And I am trying to establish penpal relationships for students at several schools here in Kreminna (in eastern Ukraine). I have already made a request throught the Peace Corps program "World Wise Schools" to correspond myself with an American classroom. But I want to work with students here so that they can correspond as a class with classrooms in the U.S. Since there are several schools here that are interested, I need to have several classrooms in the U.S. who would like to communicate with Ukrainian kids. I can't afford your catalogue right now, but is there a way that you could broadcast my request to alternative schools. The older kids here can translate between Russian and English although most kids are taught English throughout their schooling. If there are home school kids who want to correspond I would be happy to help with individual penpals as well. Older kids would probably be best just because the older kids here can translate. Thanks, Norma Norma S. Cady P.O. Box 51 Kreminna 92900 Ukraine Cell phone number (3) 809 568 03302 Email: bluesky_cady@yahoo.com
Seeking outstanding alternative high schools interested in participating in a project to determine how effective high schools prepare students for college and careers Good afternoon, I am writing you on behalf of the Educational Policy Improvement Center (EPIC) regarding an exciting new project to determine how effective high schools prepare students for college and careers. The College Readiness Evaluation for Schools & Teachers (CREST), funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will develop an instrument for high schools to assess how well they prepare students for postsecondary pursuits. The process to develop this instrument will include data collection from two-day site visits to 30-35 high schools nationally that have demonstrated success at enabling more students from underrepresented groups to be ready for postsecondary education and careers. In particular, our work focuses on public schools with significant numbers of low-income and/or students of color. We are seeking nominations of outstanding alternative high schools that might be interested in participating. Benefits to participating schools include: Public recognition for their ability and efforts to prepare students for college readiness; The opportunity to influence the definition of college readiness on a national scale; and Customized feedback on the school’s college readiness programs. I'm sending along a brochure that provides a succinct overview of our College Readiness Evaluation for Schools and Teachers (CREST), as well as a report our PI, Dr. David Conley, recently prepared for the Gates Foundation, "Toward a More Comprehensive Conception of College Readiness." I look forward to hearing from you and learning more about schools in the National Coalition of Alternative Community Schools.
